The state has a host of government agencies, such as the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board, looking after the development of infrastructure facilities such as roads, ports, railways, power, information infrastructure, urban infrastructure and water supply.

  • Gujarat has 40 minor and intermediate ports geographically dispersed across South Gujarat (13 ports), Saurashtra (23) and Kutchch (4) regions
  • There are 23 power plants, which includes nine thermal power plants, nine gas power plants, four hydro power plants and one atomic power plants
  • The total road length in Gujarat currently stands at about 745,00 km

Power:

Gujarat has been ranked second in overall performance of power sector as per the Power Sector Rating Report (2005) of Crisis – ICRA submitted to the Ministry of Power. Gujarat rank third in total generation of installed capacity of power among all the states in India.

  • The installed capacity of electricity in Gujarat has increased from a meagre capacity of 385 MW in 1966 to 9628 MW in 2008.
  • The state achieving a per capita consumption of electricity of 1354 units for the year 2006-07, which is more than twice the national average of 665 units.
  • There are 23 power plants located in Gujarat which includes nine thermal power plants, nine gas power plants, four hydro power plants and one atomic power plant.

Road:

The state of Gujarat has one of the most extensive and traffic intensive road network in the country. The total road length in Gujarat currently stands at about 74500 km. This can broadly be divided into a core and a non-core network. The core network comprises of the National Highways and around 6000 kms of State Highways, while the balance constitutes the Non-core State Highways, Major District Roads, Other District Roads and Village Roads.

Railways:

As a crucial infrastructure, railways have an important responsibility to participate in providing linkages to the upcoming centers of growth. In view of the rapid growth in the industrial and port sector, the State Government is looking for strategic options to improve transport facilities. This includes conversion of existing railway lines from narrow/meter gauge to broad gauge, establishment of new railway lines to connect the industrial growth centers, logistic hubs and ports.
